Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 has turned into one of the biggest surprise money-spinners of the year, with reports pegging its production budget at around ₹30 crore against a worldwide box office haul that has already crossed ₹160 crore in a little over a week.
The film, a sequel to the 2007 cult favourite Awarapan that had barely managed ₹12 crore lifetime, released on August 14 alongside Sunny Deol’s big-budget Batwara 1947. While Batwara 1947 came in with a reported ₹120 crore budget and star power to match, it was Awarapan 2 that took the early lead at the box office and never let go.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Awarapan 2 opened to around ₹22 crore net in India on day one, then jumped over 50 percent on day two to cross ₹50 crore net within its first weekend. By day five, the film had entered the ₹100 crore net club in India, making it the first film in Emraan Hashmi’s solo career to reach that mark. As per India TV News, the film’s worldwide gross had crossed ₹150 crore by day seven, with overseas collections alone contributing over ₹26 crore.
For a film reportedly made on a budget in the ₹30 crore range, as per BoxOfficeWala estimates, that kind of return puts Awarapan 2 firmly in blockbuster territory relative to its cost. Reports from Hollywood Reporter India also noted that the film’s opening weekend alone, at nearly ₹82 crore net, had already recovered more than double what the makers reportedly spent on the entire production.
The film’s box office run has also come with a personal milestone for Hashmi. He has previously featured in ₹100 crore-plus hits like Tiger 3, but always in a supporting or antagonist role. Awarapan 2 marks the first time a film led solely by him has crossed that mark, according to Pinkvilla and Storyboard18.
Much of the film’s success has been credited to nostalgia around the original and its music, along with the advantage of releasing during the Independence Day long weekend. With little major competition left in the following week, trade watchers now expect Awarapan 2 to continue adding to its tally as it heads deeper into its theatrical run.
