Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has reportedly closed its streaming rights for ₹160 crore, and the number becomes even more significant when set against the film’s own budget. According to a Bollywood Hungama report, Sun Pictures has sold the digital rights to Amazon Prime Video for what is being called the biggest non-theatrical deal of the year and the largest-ever OTT acquisition for a Tamil film.
Jailer 2 is reportedly being mounted on a budget of around ₹225 crore, according to earlier trade estimates. If the ₹160 crore OTT figure holds, the streaming deal alone would cover close to 71 percent of the film’s production cost — well before a single ticket is sold in theatres. That is a cushion most big-ticket Tamil films do not get from digital rights alone.
How it compares with recent South franchise deals
The Jailer 2 number stands out against recent digital deals for other major South Indian franchise films. Industry reports have pegged Leo’s OTT rights at roughly ₹120 crore and Coolie’s in a similar ₹120 crore range. A ₹160 crore deal for Jailer 2 pushes it ahead of both, and into territory that trade watchers say is usually reserved for pan-India Hindi tentpoles rather than a single-language Tamil release.
Much of that pricing confidence traces back to Rajinikanth himself. His fee for the sequel has been reported anywhere between ₹110 crore and ₹220 crore across different trade sources, with the wide gap suggesting the final figure has not been officially confirmed. What is consistent across reports is that his remuneration remains the single largest line item in the film’s budget, just as it was for the original Jailer, where his reported ₹100-110 crore fee came out of a ₹200-220 crore production cost.
The original Jailer had grossed an estimated ₹605-650 crore worldwide in 2023, according to Wikipedia’s box office record, on the back of a similar budget structure. That success is the reference point streaming platforms are using to justify the sequel’s higher price tag, even before its theatrical release date has been officially announced.
For Sun Pictures, the early OTT windfall changes the risk calculation on Jailer 2 considerably. With more than two-thirds of the reported budget already covered by a single non-theatrical deal, the film’s eventual box office run will largely determine how much of its business becomes pure profit rather than budget recovery.
