Hit or Flop Analysis

Haiwaan has gone from a disappointing opening to a near-total collapse in its second week. The film opened at ₹3 crore net on day one and closed its first-week India net collection at ₹9.85 crore. Things then got dramatically worse: on its second Friday (18 September), the film crashed to just ₹66,838 — a fall of roughly 98.6% compared to its first Thursday’s number, effectively signalling the end of its theatrical run.

With two major stars and a large-scale production, the film needed strong word-of-mouth to survive a crowded market, but it has been squeezed out by the continuing runs of Mirzapur: The Movie and sleeper-hit Hanuman Ansh, and now faces fresh competition from new releases Daayra and Vibe in its second week. Trade trackers have confirmed the Flop verdict, with lifetime collections unlikely to meaningfully cross the ₹15-16 crore mark against a ₹100-115 crore budget.

About the Movie

Directed by Priyadarshan, Haiwaan is an official Hindi remake of his own 2016 Malayalam thriller Oppam. The story follows Shyam Rane (Saif Ali Khan), a visually impaired maintenance worker who gets drawn into a murder investigation after his employer, a retired judge, is killed. Akshay Kumar plays Parshuram, a vengeful antagonist hunting for the judge’s hidden daughter, in a rare full-fledged negative role for the actor.

The film also stars Boman Irani, Shriya Pilgaonkar, and Saiyami Kher in key supporting roles. Produced by KVN Productions and Thespian Films, Haiwaan marks a tonal departure for the Akshay-Priyadarshan pairing, moving away from their usual comedy territory into a dark, suspense-driven thriller.

Overall, despite the star reunion angle generating significant buzz ahead of release, mixed-to-negative word-of-mouth and a crowded box office have led to one of the sharpest second-week collapses of the year.
