Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has reportedly closed a ₹160 crore digital-rights deal, the biggest non-theatrical agreement in Tamil cinema history — and the number lands at an odd time for the streaming business.
Through 2026, trade voices have been describing the opposite trend. Producer Dil Raju said on a recent podcast that platforms which were willing to pay around ₹50 crore for a star hero’s film until last year are now offering closer to ₹20 crore for similar projects. Big theatrical hits like Drishyam 3 and Karuppu reportedly haven’t translated their cinema-hall energy into home-viewing numbers, and platforms have responded by tightening budgets and leaning toward smaller, content-driven acquisitions instead of marquee star vehicles.
Against that backdrop, Jailer 2 reportedly outpacing the ₹120 crore each that Leo and Coolie fetched, and the ₹130 crore Netflix paid for both parts of Dhurandhar combined, is a significant outlier.
The recovery math
Jailer 2 is reportedly being made on a budget of ₹250–350 crore. Taking the midpoint of that range, a ₹160 crore digital deal would recover roughly half the film’s production cost before a single theatrical ticket is sold — a cushion most producers in the current climate can only hope for.
Why the exception? Industry sources point to a specific combination: Rajinikanth’s sustained box-office pull, the outsized commercial success of the 2023 original, and Nelson Dilipkumar returning as director. Platforms appear to be treating Jailer 2 less as a routine library acquisition and more as a subscriber-driving event in its own right — the kind of calculation that made sense industry-wide two years ago, but is reportedly being reserved for a shrinking list of franchises now.
A selective slowdown, not the end of one
For producers watching this deal, the takeaway isn’t that the OTT slowdown is over. It’s that the slowdown has become selective. Mid-tier and even large-budget films fronted by stars without a recent theatrical blockbuster are reportedly seeing their digital offers shrink, while a handful of proven franchise names are still commanding record numbers. That gap is arguably the more important story than the ₹160 crore figure itself — it suggests platforms are no longer paying for stardom broadly, but for specific, recently-proven box-office bankability.
